Normal Variant:
  • Distance is less than 1 cm in ~90% of the population.
Pathological Causes:
  • Diaphragmatic tumour
  • Organomegaly - adrenal, kidney, liver, pancreas, spleen
  • Subdiaphragmatic fluid - ascites, subphrenic abscess
  • Subpulmonic effusion

In current Western medical practice it is now becoming increasingly uncommon to see radiologists and clinicians reading processed films. The advent of digital imaging and processing has lead to the replacement of the light box with the computer screen.
